 | Sinterklaas visited New York CityOn Saturday 3 December 2011, Sinterklaas visited The Netherland Club of New York to celebrate his birthday with lots of children. It was a fantastich birthday party with 'pepernoten' and other Dutch candy. The children made beautiful 'Pieten' hats and drawings, some sang a special song for 'Sinterklaas' and one girl played the violin for him. Photos were taken by the photographer Rene Clement.  | Art Event, RAWtalk!On 15 November the Netherland Club of New York organized an art event with Ronald A. Westerhuis. Ronald A. Westerhuis is a Dutch sculptor and creator of international land and art sculpture projects and numerous steel monumental pieces for public spaces and private collections worldwide. His sculpture of the Olympic flame was presented in Athens in 2004 and was a contender in the competition for the design of the Olympic flame for the Games in Beijing in 2008. Since Ronald became fascinated by stainless steel, he has been making impressive sculptures that are exhibited and sold all over the world. Royal Dutch Shell and Prince Albert of Monaco were some of the first admirers of his artwork.  | Family Bike Tour BrooklynWe had 85 people signed up for the Family Bike Tour in Brooklyn on Sunday, October 2nd 2011. We welcomed everybody with coffee and 'speculaasjes' at Rolling Orange Bikes, the real Dutch bike store in Brooklyn. Children in the age of 2 to 4 with one parent played together with a Dutch teacher to experience Dutch culture. We will pick up these sessions in September. Dutch will be leading language!  | Big Herring PartyOn June 16 we celebrated 'vlaggetjes dag' in the Netherland Club and it was indeed a BIG Party: 260 guests ate 1000 new herrings (offered by our loyal member Steven van der Zwan); drank plenty of Heineken beers (offered by our loyal sponsor Heineken USA) and also enjoyed delicious Bols Cocktails and 'kopstootjes' sponsored by Bols. Word from the president- June 2008Dear Members, The Annual General Meeting of the Netherland Club took place on May 20. This AGM was the last meeting chaired by Hein Holtkamp, who resigned as President. Hein has been on the Board of the Club since 2001, the last 5 years as President. It goes without saying that Hein has played a vital role in the success of the Club. He initiated the Young Professionals Committee and introduced the corporate membership system, resulting in a substantial increase is funds from sponsors. We would like to thank Hein for all time and energy he devoted to the Club.

Movie -American Psyche- May 27 2008It has been a very interesting and impressive documentary followed by Q&A with the director. The events of 9/11 marked a fundamental shift in the way America saw itself in relation to the rest of the world. As the White House expanded its vocabulary in 'preemptive strikes' and 'homeland security', even the idea of 'America' changed. I -along with friend and co-creator Franois Le Gourant- began to question what the true social climate of the United States was, and whether the actions of the White House were really reflecting the interests and concerns of its people.  | Andre Rieu and his Johan Strauss Orchestra in Concert, Friday May 23rd in Bridgeport (CT)Some 8,000 people filled the Arena in Bridgeport, CT to capacity. Andre Rieu and his Johan Strauss Symphony Orchestra did not disappoint. He engaged the public with superb performances of popular classical and contemporary compositions. He presented a repertoire that was tailored to the regional audience.
It was entertaining, witty, tasteful and of high professional level. His brand is unique and I can understand why he is packing houses in all parts of the globe. Being there in person is even better than seeing him in concert on PBS. I counted 17 encores... for a concert that lasted two-and-a half hours as promised. View all photos (0) |
