Dutch Landscapes by Saskia Boelsums

Thursday 18th of January 2018

From January 18th until April 16th, 2017 award-winning Dutch photographer Saskia Boelsums’ impressive work will be exhibited at Morris Adjmi Architects in New York. Her work shows in a unique way the extraordinary beauty of various Dutch landscapes and nature. This exhibition is a must see!

Saskie Boelsums (1960) is a Dutch visual artist. She studied spatial and graphic design at the Academie Minerva in Groningen. After her graduation, she focused on making art-installations and spatial works: large works of art, often for an art route and located somewhere in nature. "Like everybody else, I then took pictures of my work, but photography did not play a serious role in my life. Five years ago that radically changed and I switched from spatial art to photography," Boelsums says. Her Dutch heritage is clearly visible in her photos. Many of her landscape photographs clearly show the connection with the 17th-century master painters, for example in the dark tones, baroque contrasts and the brightness of the details.

The landscape photos of Saskia Boelsums attract a lot of attention and she regularly receives prizes at international competitions. Her photographs have been exhibited in Amsterdam, London, Hamburg, Berlin, and Moscow. Also, she was nominated as Artist of the Year 2017 by the Dutch public.

As a visual artist and photographer from the Netherlands, I am influenced by a rich cultural heritage. I really feel connected with the Dutch tradition of landscape painters. That rich past has shaped me,” Saskia Boelsums says. “Of course one can recognize traditional elements in my photos, to me that is only logical, because I capture the same landscapes, the same skies, and the same unique light. The only difference is that I do not use oil paint and canvas, but a modern digital camera.
