Frans Timmermans at Panorama Europe 2017.

Saturday 13th of May 2017

The 2017 edition of the Panorama Europe Film Festival in NY (from May 5th till May 21st) features seventeen vibrant works—including witty comedies, gritty thrillers, and timely documentaries—representing some of the finest and most riveting films coming out of Europe today.

At the closing night of this festival the Dutch documentary The European (dir. Dirk Jan Roeleven) will be shown, with Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans and director Dirk Jan Roeleven in person and followed by closing reception.

This all-access documentary charts two years in the life of Dutch diplomat Frans Timmermans who, as First Vice-President of the European Commission, is one of the foremost leaders of the increasingly fragile European Union. From 2014 to 2016, director Jan Roeleven follows the perpetually-on-the-go Timmermans as he crisscrosses the continent, dealing with everything from the migrant crisis to Brexit. The result is both a candid portrait of a major European power player and a rare, insider’s glimpse into the state of the European Union today.
