Ilja Pfeijffer presenting 'La Superba'

Thursday 24th of March 2016 6:30 pm - 8:30pm

On Thursday March, 24 we are proud to host the book presentation 'La Superba' by Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer together with The Netherland-America Foundation, the Columbia University and Dutch Culture USA at The Netherland Club of New York.

'La Superba' is the most emblematic novel of modern Europe written in recent years: an irresistible combination of migrant novel, perverse travel guide, and postmodern ode to the imagination that lovingly describes the labyrinthine and magical city that Pfeijffer calls home: Genoa, Italy, the city known as “La Superba” (“The Proud One”) for its beauty and rich history. Migration, legal and illegal, is the central theme of this autobiographical novel about a writer who becomes trapped in his walk on the wild side in a mysterious and exotic Old World city, contrasting his chosen expat experience with those of the migrant workers from Africa he comes to know well in Genoa’s historic center who have risked everything in rickety boats crossing the Mediterranean seeking their fortunes in pursuit of the “European Dream,” revealing the universal fantasies and myths that connect us all and drive us to chase our dreams in a new world. La Superba' is a classic, wide-ranging, engaged novel, a rambling, bizarre, hilarious, touching Rabelaisian epic from a true master of language.

'La Superba'  is translated from the Dutch language by Michele Hutchison.

Ilja Pfeijffer is winner of the 2014 Libris Literatuurprijs, the most prestigious literary prize in the Netherlands. Also (two times) winner of the Tzum Prize, awarded for "the most beautiful sentence of the year".

— NRC Handelsblad: "Witty throughout, it’s extraordinarily well written, an ode to the imagination"

— Vrij Nederland:  "You read his salutary, pleasure-seeking prose to feast upon language. Bravissimo."
