The Consequences by Niña Weijers
Wednesday 4th of October 2017 6:30pm - 8:00pm
On Wednesday, October 4 2017, the multiple award-winning Dutch author Niña Weijers will present her book THE CONSEQUENCES in New York, at a joint event hosted by The Netherland Club of New York, Dutch Culture USA and DoppelHouse Press.
Niña will have a conversation on stage with Hester Velmans, a translator of contemporary Dutch and French literature and PEN award-winner, who is the translator for The Consequences. They will talk about their lives, Niña's debut and the rollercoaster of success she experienced after publishing it. In addition, the two will converse about the challenges, cultural and linguistic, of translating the book, which will be illustrated by readings. Afterwards there will be time for a Q&A, a book signing and an informal reception.
IIn 2014, Niña Weijers took the world of European literature by storm with her debut novel De Consequenties, which has sold over 30,000 copies in Holland and garnered critical praise for its maturity and ambition. It won the Anton Wachter Prize 2014 for best first novel, the Opzij Feminist Literature Prize, the Lucy B. & C.W. van der Hoogt Prize, and was shortlisted for the Libris Prize and the Golden Boekenuil, the two most important Dutch and Flemish literary awards, for the latter of which Weijers took home the coveted cash prize of the Reader’s Choice Award.
Using deft and captivating prose, Weijers tells the story of Minnie Panis, a young and talented conceptual artist, as she navigates love affairs, her unexpected success in the art world, and her relationship with an emotionally distant mother. An intimate, often humorous exploration of the intertwining cycles of death, rebirth and coincidence, The Consequences is a Bildungsroman that echoes far beyond the last page.
