TNC TALK: A Dutch approach of Alzheimer's

Monday 16th of October 2017 7:00pm - 8:30pm

"I don’t see her dissolving, I see her appearing, I see her as an Alice in Wonderland.
She is falling through time and I choose to fall with her."

On Monday 16 October, award winning Dutch actress and producer Adelheid Roosen will give a very personal lecture at The Netherland Club of NY. In 2009 Adelheid made MUM, a film about her mother who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. A eye opening documentary, that was nominated for the IDFA Award for Short Documentary and the Best International Documentary at the Norwegian Documentary Film Festival, and won a prize at the International Film Festival Kos Ippokratis in Greece.

Adelheid Roosen’s work is always a quest for the Other, for the unknown. People with Alzheimer’s do things we are unable or unwilling to understand. This can make us feel timid or ashamed. It can feel like looking into a mirror and discovering your own vulnerabilty.

Adelheid Roosen’s film shows us how she left this outsider’s perspective behind by stepping into the world of Mum and daring to be taken by the hand. She has captured this journey in four powerful and loving scenes: her mother’s encounters with her youngest sister, with her oldest and youngest daughters and with her son-in-law. With her documentary Adelheid is challenging people, both professionals and relatives, to shift their focus and to step into the world of the Alzheimer's patient. Through this film, Roosen seeks to demonstrate that Alzheimer’s is not only about struggle, but also about freedom.

After the screening of MUM (Dutch, English subtitled, 20 min.), Adelheid will give a lecture about her personal experiences with her mother and give an insight in how she developed her progressive approach. Afterwards there is time for questions and discussion.
